Software Licensing

There are essentially three types of licenses for software: University Licenses, School Licenses, and Individual Licenses.

University Licenses

Often called Site Licenses, these agreements are negotiated at the University level and generally cover any affiliated individual (faculty, staff, researcher, or student). For information about specific software agreements, see Information Services’ List of Site Licensed Software.

  • Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Microsoft Windows
  • Microsoft Office

School Licenses

These agreements are negotiated at the College of Design level, and generally only cover College of Design-owned computers (permanent faculty, staff, and lab computers). In some cases, these licenses may be for computer lab usage only.  Research Institutes and personally-owned computers are not covered by School Licenses at this time. Examples

Individual Licenses

Any other software not covered by a University or College License is considered an Individual License, and must be purchased by the Department, Research Institute or Individual, unless it was included with the computer from the manufacturer. In most cases, software can only be installed on one device at a time. Examples:

  • Apple Final Cut Studio 7
  • EndNote
  • Parallels
  • Perfect Resize
  • VMWare Fusion
